This is a group coil project that was made by Emily, Kara, and I. It is 4 inches tall and 4 inches wide. This project consist of three different types of coils with a pinch pot as a base. It is simple and smooth, but obviously focuses on texture and form. Each simple coil is smooth. Whereas, the third layer of 3-D balls utilize negative space. The top layer of the braided coil forms a natural pattern of repetition. Each turn and twist repeats itself around he entire bowl, creating a calming feeling. The new skill I learned here was how to braid the clay. It was surprisingly harder than I though it would be, but eventually I made a successful braid. I hope this coil project means a lot to Ashley Cole, who it is dedicated to. We tried to keep it small, so she can take it to college with her and use it in her dorm. We also wanted to keep the project classically simple, so it can match anything in her dorm. The WSU is the unique quality that makes it special forAshley.

This is my second bowl from the wheel. This bowl is 5 inches wide and 3 inches tall. The bowl gracefully bends out, but curls back in at the lip. The bowl is very smooth overall, although you can see through some of the white glaze to the original clay texture. Half of the bowl was dipped in black glaze and the other half was dipped in white glaze. Where the two colors meet on the middle of the bowl are very purposeful by the way they come together. Line and color are utilized with the meeting of these two colors. The line is very definite because the white and black contrast each other. The white and black even overlap to create a sliver of whimsical blue. This sliver brings out the harmony within this project. The two colors coming together are harmonious. One new thing I learned was creating a bowl that flares inwards instead of outwards, like most bowls. I like the inward shape of the bowl because it's different. This bowl says that is wants to be different and interesting.
This is my first bowl from the wheel. This bowl is 4.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches tall. This bowl flares out on the last .5 inches giving it a sassy look. The surface is very smooth, but a little rough along the lip. I dunked this bowl in the black glaze and then I used the pipette to appy white glaze on the lip. This white glaze ran down on the inside and out side of the bowl. Once the bowl was fired the white and black glaze turned into a pretty blue. One new skill I learned was using the pipette to create drip marks on the bowl. This bowl exhibites a strong since of color and value. The contrast between the black of blue creates a majestic pattern of streak after streak. Contrast is also a key element when looking at my bowl. The light and dark spaces both emphasize each other. This is my first project and I think it says a lot about how my last semester in ceramics will go. I want to experience with color and contrast a lot this year. It's the first step towards some good looking projects.
